Make it look like you’re at home

Leaving your house empty for a while makes the burglar’s job much easier. However, you may use some smart tricks to make it look like you were still at home.

We all know scenes from “Home alone” where little Kevin makes a mannequin party by the windows to trick the thieves. Sadly, some burglars (or, probably, most of them) are a bit smarter than the ones we know from the 1990 American comedy.

A few easy tricks.

However, when you are planning to be away for the night, it might be a good idea to leave the light on in one of the rooms.

You can also leave the TV or the radio or a fake TV LED light on. If you are going to be out of home for a while, you can get a timer which will turn the lights on at the given time during the day, e.g. for an hour or two in the evening to make it seem like somebody’s there.

You can also choose a random timing pattern to fool the thieves.

If you have a home phone, do not leave a message on your answering machine informing that you are away. Some burglars may try to call you in order to find out if there is anybody at the property.

Most importantly, do not brag about your holiday plans on social media and do not post photos which clearly show that you are away.

In case of a long and frequent absence, it’s best to warn the neighbours and ask them to watch your property. When they are away – you can do the same for them. In terms of security, the neighbour can be your best ally.

Prevention is the key

Of course, in order to avoid unwanted guests on your property, it’s always best to think in advance.

Get in touch with a local locksmith for a security survey and invest in good locks for doors and windows.

Install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors (do not forget about garage doors!). You may also get a smart security system or display a security sign by your gate, informing that your house is being watched. Talk with your neighbours to join the Neighbourhood Watch scheme.

Importantly, do not leave valuables in easily accessible places. This way, you will be able to take as much as possible from your holidays, family reunion, or a business trip, knowing that your home is safe and sound.
