Co-op Insurance surveyed 2000 UK residents about house security in their properties. It turned out that 28% take no action to protect their homes from criminals.

In the same survey, twelve ex-thieves were asked what deterred them the most from breaking into someone's house. It turns out that burglars are opportunists as they rarely attempt “difficult” and time-consuming break-ins. Most of them find a surveillance camera the most deterrent; burglars also list dog barking as one of the aspects of house security measures which discourages them from breaking in.

Further, such measures as solid doors, a TV turned on, closed UPVC windows, a car parked in the driveway, and lighting activated by motion sensors were mentioned as effective in terms of keeping the thief away from your house – even more effective than an alarm!

Homeowners – stay vigilant!

According to the survey, 50% of the respondents sleep with the windows open and 24% do not close the door while at home. 20% of respondents post photos of their holidays online, thus showing potential burglars that their homes may be empty.

As a homeowner, you should stay vigilant and take protective measures to strengthen your house security in advance to avoid having your property robbed.
